Greek Cooking and the Mediterranean diet is probably the healthiest in the world, not to mention simple and delicious! Ever wonder what Gyros, Baklava, Kleftiko, Souvlaki and Mezes are? Even better, would you like to learn how to make these in a beautiful, friendly and informal setting using traditional Greek methods and then sit down with friends for the traditional Greek dinner that you have prepared? Then join us for an interactive, hands-on, Greek Culinary Adventure on the serene and inviting island of Poros!

Your host for all our Greek cooking activities at Odyssey Centre is Katerina Sakelliou. Katerina is passionate about cooking and is interested and knowledgeable in the historical roots of traditional Greek cuisine. Katerina specializes in both traditional and modern Greek cooking. Her skills have become very sought after and when she is not giving lessons in Poros or preparing and supervising the meals at Odyssey Bistro in Askeli, she also provides lessons in Greek cooking throughout other parts of Europe.

Katerina shares her expertise and her passion for her culture and her food in the hopes that what you learn from participating in her Greek cooking adventure will last you a lifetime and provide you with new and exciting, delicious and healthy, future meals for your family and friends upon your return from your Poros Adventure.

ITINERARY

ITINERARY

Day 1

Arrival Day Saturday We will be met at the Athens airport for car transfer to the Island of Poros. Our journey will take approximately two hours and will provide a lovely sightseeing opportunity as we travel to our beautiful island home away from home. Mezes, an afternoon snack and wine will be served on your private balcony and you have the afternoon free to explore Askeli, relax by the pool, or enjoy the pleasures of a swim in the clear blue sea. In the evening you will be a guest at the welcome dinner. Katerina will introduce you to some of the food that you will learn to cook during your stay. Dinner will be served at Odyssey Centre.

Day 2

Sunday After breakfast, you will explore the menus and recipes. Lunch will be served around 12:30; afterwards you may like to take a stroll into Poros town or a local walk followed by a swim at Love Bay. Around 2:30 pm your cooking lesson begins, this will be followed by a late afternoon drink or a small siesta, before returning around 5:00 pm to cook the final stages of dinner which will be served in the balmy and relaxed evening atmosphere of Odyssey Centre.

Day 3

Monday After an earlier-than-usual breakfast we will take a walk into Poros Harbor to visit the fish market where we will select and purchase a range of ingredients for today’s activity. This will be followed by a visit to a local café for coffee and Greek pastries. After lunch at Odyssey, the early part of the afternoon is free. Mid-afternoon we will start the next cooking lesson to prepare the evening meal from the fish selected at the market, we might decide on bar-b-q with the fish, along with some freshly prepared (by you) Greek salads, fish sauces, roasted vegetables, and some herb dressings. We will then enjoy dinner in a relaxed, sociable style late into the evening at Odyssey Centre.

Day 4

Tuesday Today will include an excursion to the quaint island of Hydra, with lunch provided. On return to Poros, dinner will be provided at Odyssey or Katerina will be accompany us for dinner at an alternative local Taverna or restaurant. Katerina is a “hometown girl”, so she knows everyone on the island! You will feel at-home and welcome!

Day 5

Wednesday This is a free day for you to explore Poros Island, Mainland Greece, or just relax on Askeli Beach or by the pool. Lunch will be provided at Odyssey around 1:00pm. Dinner will be served around 8:00pm in Odyssey or by arrangement you will be accompanied for dinner at a local Taverna or restaurant in Poros town.

Day 6

Thursday After breakfast we will have the opportunity to visit either Katerina’s own lemon or olive grove to learn about the use of both these ingredients in Greek cooking, or we will take motorbikes for a tour of Poros Island to see the archaeological excavation of Poseidon’s Temple, and the local Monastery. A picnic lunch will be provided. Upon returning to Odyssey mid-afternoon we will begin our next cooking lesson, a lovely classic Greek meal will then be served at Odyssey Centre.

Day 7

Friday Depending on the season, we will visit different locations to learn about the importance of seasonal ingredients in Greek cooking, including the collection of local herbs. Lunch will be provided either at Odyssey or picnic. Tonight is the finale dinner this will be a true Greek experience which will form the basis of your cooking lesson with many surprises. Dinner will be at the Odyssey Centre.

Day 8

Saturday Departure day We will enjoy breakfast together and depart by midday by boat to Piraeus, the Port of Athens. At this time our adventure concludes. You are welcome to spend an additional night (or nights) in Athens for more sightseeing. This is recommended as it will make it easier for you to make a reasonable and unhurried flight reservation back home. Please contact us for hotel and travel suggestions.
